Sizzling Hot Make-Up Tips to Brighten up Your Winter

24 Nov

With Winter firmly upon us we wanted to give you some bang-on-trend make-up tips that should brighten up the darkest and coldest of days and add a bit of fun into your Winter wardrobe.

Nude Make-up

Gorgeous nude make up for blondes

This season, the make-up trends are to look feminine and natural so nude make-up is all the rage. Believe it or not, it is not as easy as you think to create this look and the most important tip of all is  not to overdo it, afterall  all you are trying to do is accentuate your natural beauty. All you need is makeup foundation tone that perfectly suits your complexion, neutral eyeshadow shade, mascara to make your eyes pop, a bit of blush applied to the apples of your cheekbones and nude lip-gloss or lipstick color to complete the look.

Vampy Lips

yummy Vampy lips
Aside from the natural look  this Autumn/Winter bold dark lips are also hot hot hot.  Whether its dark plummy red, orange or dark purple your lips will look perfectly vampy. Use lip liner to fill in the lips inwards with feather strokes starting near the lip line, then brush your lips with lipstick brush to add shine to your bright lips. Lip-smackingly gorgeous!

Thick Eyebrows

Its all about the eyebrows

Forget your tweezers or your monthly appointment for an eyebrow wax/thread  as this Winter you can kiss goodbye to thin over-plucked brows as thick natural eyebrows are now in and will do more to explore the natural beauty of your eyes.  To formulate naturally thick eyebrows use a sharp eyebrow pencil and follow the natural structure. Hide parts that are not covered with hair, with brow powder or with a lighter colour than the natural brow color.

Smokey Eyes

Smokin!Smokey eyes are still proving as popular as they were last year and with Christmas parties around the corner then we have 5 top tips on how to create this impactful and sultry look:
1. Dont use black eyeliner – brown eye pencil can often look much more effective and creates less contrast with your skin tone
2. Don’t use black eyeshadow, but opt for a dark eyeshadow as this looks far more sexy without being too overbearing.

3. A widely used technique is to apply a lighter eyeshadow as well as your main dark color. An ideal shade for that purpose is something that matches your skin tone.
4. A very effective way of taking the edge off your black smokey eyes is to mix some bronze or brown eye shadow in. These warmer hues will help the eye design blend in better with your skin tone resulting in a more natural look
5. Blend….and blend well. If, after having applied and blended your eye makeup, you atill decide that it’s still too strong, try powdering it. Use something soft like a cotton ball

We hope you like our tips.  If you have any then please do share them with us.

The truth about The Apprentice and Back Pain at work

21 Jul

We love Lord Sugar and the Apprentice, and we’re so happy that Tom Pellereau won – he’s so great. As specialists in supporting good health in the workplace we loved his business plan, but we couldn’t help feeling concerned by Lord Sugar’s lack of knowledge of current health and safety legislation regarding liability of employers to look after staff’s physical condition at work.

Direct from the Health and Safety Executive’s website:

Employers have a legal obligation to protect the health and safety of their employees and other people who might be affected by what they do. Some health and safety regulations are particularly relevant to dealing with back pain in the workplace:

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 regulation 3 requires that all employers assess the risks to the health and safety of their employees while they are at work. The HSE observes that sitting at a workstation for a long period of time if the workstation is not correctly arranged or adjusted to fit the person, eg working with computers; can cause back pain and RSI injuries

Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 as amended (DSE Regulations). Some users of visual display units may get aches and pains, including back pain. Surveys have found that high proportions of DSE workers report aches, pains or eye discomfort.

The national charity ‘BackCare’ aims to reduce the impact of back pain and states that:

The National Health Service spends more than £1 billion per year on back pain related costs, this includes:

  • £512 million on hospital costs for back pain patients.
  • £141 million on GP consultations for back pain.
  • £150.6 million on physiotherapy treatments for back pain.

If this isn’t a business case for improving work related backpain issues, we’re not sure what is.

Glo provides a whole host of services to help you ensure your organisation is complying with HSE regulations. In particular, our desk ergonomics advice and workshops ensure compliance from a DSE and workstation perspective. Our onsite massage service provides ongoing support to alleviate tension/pain in the back and help prevent absence and motivate staff. And our stress management courses provide staff with the tools to help take responsibility for managing stress at work.

Please contact charlotte or kelly on 020 7 096 0285 or email us: info@glo-wellbeing.co.uk for further information and to receive a special promotion on these services.

Our Essential Top Beauty and Wellbeing Holiday Tips

11 Jul

Yippee – its holiday season…(in fact I am jetting off on holiday this week) and  with so much to arrange before your Summer Hols, we though we would put together a list of our top health and beauty tips so that you can prepare for yours, stay safe and look Its holiday time!gorgeous  :

THE FLIGHT

1. Stay Hydrated – Airplanes have very low humidity.  Humidity refers to the amount of water molecules in the air. Our comfort zone as people is around 50% – meaning the air is 50% saturated with water. An airline cabin can fall to as low as 1% on long flights. (Lower than the Sahara desert). Dehydration doesn’t only mean you’ll feel thirsty, it means your body will lose water too. Drink plenty of water the days before your flight as well as during and following your flight to feel the benefits and no matter how tempting drinking alcohol and coffee may be,  please avoid them as they can make you even more hydrated.

2. Keep Moving -  Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot, or thrombus, that develops in deep veins such as those in the leg and can affect anyone that is travelling and immobile for long periods of time.  Keep your legs mobile whilst sitting – rotate your ankles and stretch your legs as far as you can and rock your feet from heel to toe. You can also try taking 100mg of aspirin daily before, during and after the flight as this thins the blood and helps prevent clotting.  Why not also buy and wear a pair of specially designed support socks too.  Not the sexiest looking things in the world, but they do work!

BEACH BEAUTY

Sunbathe Safely

3. Protect your Hair – Hair can get damaged on holiday and so that you ensure your locks stay lustrous check out our recommendations below:

Seawater crystallizes the hair fibre which can leave a film, making hair harder to manage and if your hair is bleached it also weakens its structure. As well as shampooing and conditioning after a dip in the ocean, we also recommend rinsing hair in fresh water before swimming, as wet hair offers some protection. Even better, pop on some conditioner.  The chemicals used in swimming pools dont fare any better I am afraid and for those with blonde hair swimming in chlorinated pools can result in a green tinge. Remember to use shampoo and conditioner as soon as you have finished swimming as this should help get rid of  some of the nasty chemicals.  If your hair is already showing signs of going green then we suggest that a rinse with tomato juice will help.  Yes – really!

4. Sunbathing  – To get the optimum results for the perfect all over tan, we suggest you start preparing the week before you leave.  Treat yourself to a programme of exfoliation (removal of dead skin),  a massage with oils that makes your skin glossy and an application of self-tanning cream.  These products which have a base of fruit acids (AHA/Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and erythulose or vegetable extracts should be used in addition to sunscreens to boost your tanning.  You can also help your skin from the “inside” by taking sun capsules with a base of carotene and selenium.  Once you are on your holiday, clean your skin completely before you start to sunbathe, but remember, some ingredients in make-up and perfume can make your skin more susceptible to sunburn. We recommend you lather up with a sunscreen just after you get out of the shower and before you hit the beach/pool.  I am pretty sure you all know to apply a high factor for sun cream regularly and not to sunbathe during the midday heat, but we don’t get told enough that the sun (not in excess of course) is also good for us and can help improve our mood and also produce Vitamin D.

5. Shades -  Aside from small dogs, sunglasses are the perfect celebrity accessory and whilst we all want to look like Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss with their wonderfully oversized and oh so gorgeous shades, we do need to make sure that they do protect the eyes and suit the face as well as making us look hot to trot. Firstly, when shopping look for labels that say the lenses block out 99% to 100% of UV radiation. Make sure they block out both UVA and UVB rays too. It’s also worth pointing out that the colour of lenses in sunglasses shouldn’t make a difference in protection and spending more won’t necessarily buy you more protection. Finally make sure the sunglasses sit on your face from every angle and that they are not too tight and not too loose

6. Natural beauty – In order to create that au naturelle look whilst sunbathing without having to cake on the make-up then invest in self tanning lotion before you hit the beach.  It will give you a little bit of colour and confidence on the first few days of the holiday before your real tan comes through and you wont feel so pasty white.  If  you really need to put anything on your face, then try a tinted moisturiser as this is much lighter than a foundation.

If you have fair  eyelashes and you find your can’t live without your trusty mascara then consider getting your eyelashes tinted a darker colour. Remember your beauty therapist will need to do a patch test 24 hours before you have this done, so don’t book in the day before.  Individual false eyelashes can also give make-up free eyes a bit more definition too. Tinted lip moisturiser sticks can also keep your lips hydrated and protected, but with a little bit of colour so that you look super lovely.

The last tip of all is to have a fantastic holiday and enjoy your much-needed rest and relaxation!

DIY Fruity Face Masks

20 Jun

Whilst we are on our fruity tip, we wanted to give you some great fruity face mask recipes, which should keep your skin feeling refreshed and revitalised for the Summer months without breaking the bank.

A fruit facial mask can provide many benefits for the skin. For example, a facial mask using the papaya fruit is great because the enzymes in the papaya help to remove dead and flaking skin. In other words, it is a great natural exfoliator. A facial made with bananas can help moisturize the skin. Strawberries are useful in combating oily skin. Generally, fruit facials nourish the skin with essential vitamins and provide antioxidant protection.

Below are some recipes that you can try at home:

Pear Facial Mask
1 ripe pear
½ teaspoon of honey
1 tablespoon of heavy cream

Start by peeling and coring the pear. Cut the pear into small pieces and place them in a small dish. Using a fork, mash the pear fruit into a smooth paste. Next, add the honey and heavy cream. Spread the mixture evenly over the skin on the face and neck. Let it sit on the skin for 15 minutes and then rinse the pear facial mask off with warm water. Follow up with a splash of cool water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Papaya Fruit Facial Mask
¼ of a ripe papaya
4 teaspoons of green cosmetic clay
1 ½ teaspoons of aloe vera gel

Purée the papaya fruit, clay, and aloe vera gel together. Smooth the mixture over the face and neck regions and leave it on the skin for approximately 20 minutes. Rinse off with cool water.

Apple Mask
1 cored apple cut into quarters
2 tablespoons of honey
½ teaspoon of sage

Chop up the apple quarters in a food processor. Add the honey and sage and then refrigerate for about 10 minutes. Lightly pat the mixture onto the face until the honey feels tacky. Leave it on the skin for 30 minutes and then rinse the face mask off with cool water.

Peach Facial
1 medium peach
1 tablespoon of honey
oatmeal (as needed)

Take the peach and cook it until it is soft. Mash the cooked peach using a fork. Next, add the honey and enough oatmeal until the mixture is thick. Apply the mask to the skin and let it sit on the skin for about ten minutes. Rinse off the peach facial masque with cool clean water.

Banana Fruit Facial Mask

2 ripe medium bananas
honey

Mash the ripe bananas with a fork and avoid over mashing. Too much mashing will cause the banana mixture to become runny. Add about one tablespoon of honey. Smooth the mixture over the skin and leave it on for approximately ten minutes. Follow with a cool clean water rinse and gently pat dry the face.

Grape Facial Mask Recipe
1 cup of green grapes
1 teaspoon of honey or 1 egg yolk

Crush the green grapes into a pulp. Next, add the honey or egg yolk (whichever is desired). Place the mixture on dampened skin for 15 minutes and then rinse off. This mask is ideal for faces that have been exposed to too much sun.

Strawberry Mask
½ cup of very ripe strawberries
¼ cup cornstarch

Mix the strawberries and cornstarch together to make a paste. Apply the facial mixture to the face. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse with cool water.

Avocado Fruit Mask Recipe
¼ of a ripe avocado
½ cup of buttermilk
1 egg yolk

Beat the egg yolk and blend in the mashed avocado and buttermilk. Apply to the face and leave it on for five minutes. After the five minutes, spread on a little more of the facial mask mixture. Leave on for an additional five minutes. Rinse the face with warm water.

DIY Wedding Ideas

4 Apr

With the Royal wedding weeks away and Summer always a popular time for those wedding bells to ring a ding ding, our topic this month is weddings. Whilst we may not all have the budget of a Royal Wedding and with DIY weddings the hot topic for 2011, we have had some help from Martha Stewart Weddings to put together some top tips that should make your wedding one to remember without breaking the bank:

Flowers

Paper Dahlia

Make your very own tissue paper flowers decorations

Often florist costs are hugely expensive for table decorations so why not use living plants that can double up as presents for your guests. Potted plants or herbs like lavender and rosemary make for gorgeous table displays and will make your venue smell gorgeous too! Handmade tissue paper flowers can also bring some colour and elegance to your wedding and they are really fun to make, plus any left over tissue paper can be used to make confetti. If you visit Martha Stewarts Weddings website she gives you details on how to create your very own tissue paper flowers.

Cakes

Yummy Cup Cakes

Cup cakes make for a fantastic alternative to traditional wedding cake.

If you want to create maximum impact with you wedding cake, then why not buy a simple white undecorated cake from a high street supermarket such as Marks and Spencers and decorate it yourself with the most amazingly colourful butterflies from Butterfly Bazaar. For those Brides who want something less traditional, then cup cake tiers are fun and you can always have a bash at making them yourself. It may also seem like a break from tradition to serve more than one cake at a wedding, but it’s actually quite an old custom. At medieval Anglo-Saxon weddings, many small cakes would be served in a mountainous pile, and eventually pocketed for the journey home. Sometimes the bride and groom attempted to kiss over this pile of “cakes”, so if you and your hubby to-be cannot decide on whether it should be carrot cake, chocolate cake, fruit cake or even profitoroles – then why not have all of them?!

Wedding Stationery
Instead of printing expensive invitations and name plates, there are plenty of templates and other creative ideas available on line from bloggers such as I Do It Yourself. Martha Stewart also has some novel ideas such as fabric invites, stitched invitations and even info on how to make your own envelopes.

Wedding Favours

Chocolate bars adorned with the faces of the bride and groom are sweet in more ways than one. Choose a few favorite photos (those lovely school photos!), then print them using an ink-jet printer or photocopy onto lightweight paper. Trim so that the photos are slightly shorter than candy bars. Remove outer wrappers but not inner foil. Wrap each candy bar with a photo, and secure in back with double-sided tape. You can also accessorise with a waxed twine tied in a small bow

Another lovely wedding favour are Candles in three shades of white which are wrapped in corrugated paper and tied with waxed twine; written inside is a message from the bride and groom.

For a scrumptious morning-after meal, arrange miniature jams, muffins and pastries in a basket lined with napkins, then add a clip art tag for your guests to take home with them.

I hope we have inspired you with some unique and not so expensive wedding ideas.

Do keep checking our blogs out throughout the month for more wedding tips.
