The truth about The Apprentice and Back Pain at work

21 Jul

We love Lord Sugar and the Apprentice, and we’re so happy that Tom Pellereau won – he’s so great. As specialists in supporting good health in the workplace we loved his business plan, but we couldn’t help feeling concerned by Lord Sugar’s lack of knowledge of current health and safety legislation regarding liability of employers to look after staff’s physical condition at work.

Direct from the Health and Safety Executive’s website:

Employers have a legal obligation to protect the health and safety of their employees and other people who might be affected by what they do. Some health and safety regulations are particularly relevant to dealing with back pain in the workplace:

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 regulation 3 requires that all employers assess the risks to the health and safety of their employees while they are at work. The HSE observes that sitting at a workstation for a long period of time if the workstation is not correctly arranged or adjusted to fit the person, eg working with computers; can cause back pain and RSI injuries

Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 as amended (DSE Regulations). Some users of visual display units may get aches and pains, including back pain. Surveys have found that high proportions of DSE workers report aches, pains or eye discomfort.

The national charity ‘BackCare’ aims to reduce the impact of back pain and states that:

The National Health Service spends more than £1 billion per year on back pain related costs, this includes:

  • £512 million on hospital costs for back pain patients.
  • £141 million on GP consultations for back pain.
  • £150.6 million on physiotherapy treatments for back pain.

If this isn’t a business case for improving work related backpain issues, we’re not sure what is.

Glo provides a whole host of services to help you ensure your organisation is complying with HSE regulations. In particular, our desk ergonomics advice and workshops ensure compliance from a DSE and workstation perspective. Our onsite massage service provides ongoing support to alleviate tension/pain in the back and help prevent absence and motivate staff. And our stress management courses provide staff with the tools to help take responsibility for managing stress at work.

Give your belly a rest this summer holiday

19 Jul

At last the holiday season is upon us, a time when we pack up our sunglasses and Factor 15 in search of sunshine, adventure, romance, or just a well-earned rest.

So what better time to give your digestive system a holiday too? I’m not talking about juice fasts and enemas, unless that’s you’re thing. What I mean is taking a break from the ordinary and trying something new.

It is a fact that when we are relaxed, our digestive systems will be more efficient, meaning this is an ideal time to experiment with different foods. So however you eat normally, be it junk food, carb-free, Weightwatchers points, take a holiday and go native.

Locally grown, seasonal produce will contain densely packed nutrients, helping you to boost you immune system and give you an amazing anti-ageing glow.

Look out for some nutritional delights wherever you find yourself this summer:

  1. In Scandinavian countries look out for omega-3 rich herring and salmon which will help to keep your heart healthy
  2. In Germany, Sauerkraut is a fabulous superfood. Cabbage is packed with cancer-fighting phytochemicals, vitamins and fibre. And the pickling process makes it really good for the gut.
  3. In the Med take advantage of the local olive oil which contains high levels of good fats and omega-3s, which help to lower cholesterol and has anti-inflammatory properties similar to that of ibuprofen
  4. In the Middle East, join the locals in some fresh mint tea is a favourite in this region to aid digestion. An make sure you eat lots of hummus as chickpeas are great for the digestive and nervous system as well as helping to balance hormones. They also contain tryptophan, which is the pre-cursor to happy hormone serotonin
  5. In Eastern Europe, beetroot, the main ingredient in borscht, is great for heart health and may help to prevent cancer
  6. In Asia, the spices have amazing health properties:
  7. Ginger can help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and relieve nausea
  8. Turmeric used in curries is a powerful anti-oxidant
  9. Cumin and coriander seeds can reduce cancer and asthma risk.
  10. And you can even find amazing superfoods in the UK, such as porridge oats from Scotland, which can help to protect your heart and lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

    The basic rules are:

  1. Eat as many different fruits and vegetables as you can, especially looking for those with bright colours, which will counteract some of the age-damage caused by too much sun.
  2. Keep hydrated, especially if you are in a hot climate and if you are drinking alcohol and coffee. You will need more water than normal.
  3. Have a little bit of everything you fancy, but don’t over-indulge. Remember, the first couple of forkfuls are always the tastiest!
  4. Take risks. Try the local delicacy, even if it sounds strange. You may find something that is both healthy and delicious.
  5. If in doubt, ask the waiter for a recommendation.
  6. And try to get recipes for your favourites dishes too, so you can recreate them at home and so bring some of the sunshine and happy memories flooding back on rainy October evening back in Blighty.

Bon voyage!

Our Essential Top Beauty and Wellbeing Holiday Tips

11 Jul

Yippee – its holiday season…(in fact I am jetting off on holiday this week) and  with so much to arrange before your Summer Hols, we though we would put together a list of our top health and beauty tips so that you can prepare for yours, stay safe and look Its holiday time!gorgeous  :

THE FLIGHT

1. Stay Hydrated – Airplanes have very low humidity.  Humidity refers to the amount of water molecules in the air. Our comfort zone as people is around 50% – meaning the air is 50% saturated with water. An airline cabin can fall to as low as 1% on long flights. (Lower than the Sahara desert). Dehydration doesn’t only mean you’ll feel thirsty, it means your body will lose water too. Drink plenty of water the days before your flight as well as during and following your flight to feel the benefits and no matter how tempting drinking alcohol and coffee may be,  please avoid them as they can make you even more hydrated.

2. Keep Moving –  Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot, or thrombus, that develops in deep veins such as those in the leg and can affect anyone that is travelling and immobile for long periods of time.  Keep your legs mobile whilst sitting – rotate your ankles and stretch your legs as far as you can and rock your feet from heel to toe. You can also try taking 100mg of aspirin daily before, during and after the flight as this thins the blood and helps prevent clotting.  Why not also buy and wear a pair of specially designed support socks too.  Not the sexiest looking things in the world, but they do work!

BEACH BEAUTY

Sunbathe Safely

3. Protect your Hair – Hair can get damaged on holiday and so that you ensure your locks stay lustrous check out our recommendations below:

Seawater crystallizes the hair fibre which can leave a film, making hair harder to manage and if your hair is bleached it also weakens its structure. As well as shampooing and conditioning after a dip in the ocean, we also recommend rinsing hair in fresh water before swimming, as wet hair offers some protection. Even better, pop on some conditioner.  The chemicals used in swimming pools dont fare any better I am afraid and for those with blonde hair swimming in chlorinated pools can result in a green tinge. Remember to use shampoo and conditioner as soon as you have finished swimming as this should help get rid of  some of the nasty chemicals.  If your hair is already showing signs of going green then we suggest that a rinse with tomato juice will help.  Yes – really!

4. Sunbathing  – To get the optimum results for the perfect all over tan, we suggest you start preparing the week before you leave.  Treat yourself to a programme of exfoliation (removal of dead skin),  a massage with oils that makes your skin glossy and an application of self-tanning cream.  These products which have a base of fruit acids (AHA/Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and erythulose or vegetable extracts should be used in addition to sunscreens to boost your tanning.  You can also help your skin from the “inside” by taking sun capsules with a base of carotene and selenium.  Once you are on your holiday, clean your skin completely before you start to sunbathe, but remember, some ingredients in make-up and perfume can make your skin more susceptible to sunburn. We recommend you lather up with a sunscreen just after you get out of the shower and before you hit the beach/pool.  I am pretty sure you all know to apply a high factor for sun cream regularly and not to sunbathe during the midday heat, but we don’t get told enough that the sun (not in excess of course) is also good for us and can help improve our mood and also produce Vitamin D.

5. Shades –  Aside from small dogs, sunglasses are the perfect celebrity accessory and whilst we all want to look like Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss with their wonderfully oversized and oh so gorgeous shades, we do need to make sure that they do protect the eyes and suit the face as well as making us look hot to trot. Firstly, when shopping look for labels that say the lenses block out 99% to 100% of UV radiation. Make sure they block out both UVA and UVB rays too. It’s also worth pointing out that the colour of lenses in sunglasses shouldn’t make a difference in protection and spending more won’t necessarily buy you more protection. Finally make sure the sunglasses sit on your face from every angle and that they are not too tight and not too loose

6. Natural beauty – In order to create that au naturelle look whilst sunbathing without having to cake on the make-up then invest in self tanning lotion before you hit the beach.  It will give you a little bit of colour and confidence on the first few days of the holiday before your real tan comes through and you wont feel so pasty white.  If  you really need to put anything on your face, then try a tinted moisturiser as this is much lighter than a foundation.

If you have fair  eyelashes and you find your can’t live without your trusty mascara then consider getting your eyelashes tinted a darker colour. Remember your beauty therapist will need to do a patch test 24 hours before you have this done, so don’t book in the day before.  Individual false eyelashes can also give make-up free eyes a bit more definition too. Tinted lip moisturiser sticks can also keep your lips hydrated and protected, but with a little bit of colour so that you look super lovely.

The last tip of all is to have a fantastic holiday and enjoy your much-needed rest and relaxation!

Retreats at the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre in the West

4 Jul

Located in a peaceful valley on the banks of the river Esk in Scotland, Kagyu Samye Ling was the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre to have been established in the West. It is a centre for wisdom and learning within the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and is open to people of all faiths and none. You will be made welcome  for day visits, short stays or to participate in their meditation retreats and courses available throughout the year.

Founded in 1967 and currently under the guidance of Abbot Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche, Samye Ling is part of Rokpa Trust, a registered charity which has three main areas of activity: spiritual, humanitarian aid, and Tibetan medicine and therapy. Their activity extends around the world through an international network of Dharma centres.

There are a range of different retreat options at Samye Ling. You can attend week-long retreats at our Purelands Retreat Centre, which is half a mile from Samye Ling. These are guided retreats led by well-qualified, experienced teachers with a balanced daily programme of meditation and teaching sessions. They are particularly appropriate for those who wish to devote a period of time to more intensive study and practice, but who do not have the time or opportunity to participate in longer retreats. Details on each of the shorter courses can be found here and cover Yoga, Meditation, Tai Chi, Art, Gardening, and Therapy.

This centre is so beautifully positioned and even more accessible than some other retreat centres as it’s in the UK. Courses are affordable and will provide you with a unique, restful and very special holiday experience.
