The do’s and don’ts of celebrity diets ….

2 Jun

We all want to look our best, but for celebrities, their look is their livelihood. So it’s no wonder that magazines like Heat and Closer are full of stories about our favourite A-listers’ drastic efforts to lose the pounds.

I am often horrified when I see what these slebs claim to be eating. Today I read an article about Claire Richards formerly of Steps losing 5st on a diet consisting of croissants, bacon butties and Jaffa cakes. The diet severely restricted calories, hence the weight loss, but in so doing she also severely restricted essential nutrients. I don’t imagine she felt great, whatever the scales say. I also don’t believe weight loss from calorie restriction is sustainable and is one if the first steps to classic yoyo dieting.

One celebrity who does seem to know her onions as far as dieting is concerned is Gwyneth Paltrow. We all know she has been s bit ‘faddy’ in the past, but her recently-published cook book showed she was not completely fanatical and had created yummy treats for herself and her family from really good, natural ingredients. She seems to be advocating a policy of “a little of what you fancy…” which I wholeheartedly endorse.

She also follows a twice-yearly detoxification programme devised by New York-based doctor, Alejandro Junger.

The idea behind this is to have a couple of weeks of taking the strain off the digestive system in order to help rid the body of toxins. Typically you have a nutrient-dense vegetable smoothie for breakfast, a salad with some healthy protein, like grilled salmon for lunch and a soup for dinner.

I have followed his plan, outlined in his book ‘Clean: A Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body’s Natural Ability to Heal Itself’ and I have to say I felt amazing.

The beauty of this plan is that it focuses on simply, natural, plant-based foods, which means you can cut down on calories without losing out on nutrients. Cutting out toxic junk foods and processed foods, caffeine, and alcohol you to lose weight and feel great.

However we are all biochemically different. What works for Gwynnie might not work for you. So if you really want to achieve a celebrity body, I recommend you go and see a qualified nutritional therapist who will be able to develop a tailored plan just for you.
